Periodontal (gum) treatment

Periodontal (gum) treatment

About this Project

Periodontal (Gum) disease is caused by certain bacteria that live in our mouths. The early stage of periodontal disease is called gingivitis. A tell-tale sign of gum disease is spitting blood when you brush. Sufferers can also experience bad breath and a bad taste. If untreated, gum disease can eventually destroy the gums and bone which support your teeth.

Gum disease has a genetic component, and some people are more susceptible than others. If you do suffer from gum disease, you generally require maintenance and monitoring for this throughout most of your life.

If your dentist or hygienist is concerned about your gum health they will refer you to see our specialist periodontist, Dr Federico Tinti. At your first appointment with Dr Tinti he will assess your gum health, take measurements of the pocket between your gums and teeth and decide on any gum treatment required.

Periodontal treatment normally involves the periodontist cleaning the roots of your teeth and gums to help control the bacteria that causes gum disease.  It is a more intensive clean than with the hygienist, and commonly carried out under local anaesthetic. The ‘tartar’ (calculus) is removed above and below the gum line by cleaning (scaling) the teeth.  This involves the careful use of powered and fine hand operated cleaning instruments on the tooth surfaces. Sometimes surgery is required to facilitate this.

He will give you special instructions on how to clean your teeth at home and continue to monitor the improvement of your gums over the subsequent months and years.
